    Sermon outline frameworks

Four reliable frameworks for building a sermon that honors the text and lands in the heart. Pair any of them with the free Sermon Notes printable so your congregation can capture the message in real time.

    Expository (verse-by-verse)

Best for deep-dive series through a book of the Bible.

    1. 1.Read the passage aloud in KJV — the same translation your congregation holds.
    2. 2.Identify the natural literary unit (a paragraph, a parable, a paragraph of argument).
    3. 3.State the original author's main point in one sentence.
    4. 4.Walk verse-by-verse and explain meaning, context, and cross-references.
    5. 5.Apply: How does this passage rebuke, correct, instruct (2 Tim 3:16)?
    6. 6.Close with one Christ-centered call to action and a prayer.

    Topical (one big idea)

Best for felt-need Sundays, holidays, or a stand-alone message.

    1. 1.Define the topic in one sentence the youngest believer can repeat.
    2. 2.Pick 3–5 KJV passages that converge on the topic — diverse books strengthen the case.
    3. 3.For each passage, give context first so you aren't proof-texting.
    4. 4.Build the message around one main proposition with 2–4 supports.
    5. 5.Anticipate objections from your congregation and answer them from Scripture.
    6. 6.End with a clear 'this week, do this' application.

    Narrative (story-shaped)

Best for Old Testament stories, the Gospels, Acts.

    1. 1.Retell the story in your own words — set scene, conflict, climax, resolution.
    2. 2.Anchor it in the larger redemptive arc of Scripture.
    3. 3.Identify the character(s) the listener naturally identifies with.
    4. 4.Reveal where Christ is in or behind the story.
    5. 5.Draw out 1–2 timeless truths the original audience and we share.
    6. 6.Apply concretely — what does Tuesday look like because of Sunday?

    Christ-centered (any text)

Overlay on any of the above to keep every sermon gospel-saturated.

    1. 1.Ask: How does this text reveal something true about God's character?
    2. 2.Ask: How does this text expose the human condition or sin?
    3. 3.Ask: How is this text fulfilled, embodied, or answered in Christ?
    4. 4.Ask: How does the gospel change how my people live this out Monday?
    5. 5.Land the plane on Christ — not just on moralism.

    A 6-step sermon prep flow

    1

Pick the text first, not the topic

A passage-first habit guards against riding hobby horses. Walk through a book, a section, or a lectionary.

    2

Read it 10 times before opening commentaries

Read aloud, read in multiple sittings, read on your knees. Let Scripture preach to you first.

    3

Write the Big Idea in one sentence

If you can't state the message in 12 words, you don't have a sermon yet — you have a stack of notes.

    4

    Outline in 3 movements

Most listeners can hold 3 points. State each as a complete sentence, not a single word.

    5

    Land every point in application

Move from explanation to illustration to application before changing points.

    6

Close on Christ, not on yourself

The last 90 seconds should magnify Jesus and call for response.

    Frequently asked questions

Can our church really print and distribute all of this for free?

Yes. Every printable on Bible Sundays is free for unlimited church use — bulletins, Sunday school, welcome tables, baptism classes, retreats. No watermark removal, no payment, no email signup.

Do I need to credit Bible Sundays?

Not required, but appreciated. A small line like 'Printable from biblesundays.com' on a bulletin or a link in your church newsletter helps other pastors find these resources too.

    What translation do you use?

All Scripture is quoted in the King James Version (KJV) — public domain and trusted across most Baptist and evangelical congregations.

Can I modify the printables for our church?

The PDFs themselves are fixed, but if your church needs a customized version (your church logo on a baptism certificate, a specific reading plan, custom sermon notes), email us and we'll usually build it for free.

Will the embed widget slow down our church website?

No. It's a single lightweight iframe (under 30kb), lazy-loaded, with no third-party tracking on your visitors.

Need something we haven't built yet?

If your church needs a custom printable, a tailored reading plan, or a resource you don't see here — tell us. We build pastor requests for free.
