A sermon is not just information delivered on a Sunday morning — it is the public reading and exposition of God's Word, an event the church has gathered around for two thousand years. And yet most Christians forget the main point of the sermon by Wednesday. Not because they aren't interested, but because they didn't capture it. Note-taking changes that. The simple act of writing down the main point in one sentence forces you to listen for it. Capturing two or three key cross-references means you'll remember where the preacher went in Scripture. Writing one specific application — "this week I will…" — moves the sermon from the sanctuary into Tuesday's email and Friday's family conversation. There is a long Christian tradition behind this. The Puritans took notes during sermons that filled entire notebooks. Jonathan Edwards's congregation expected to be quizzed on the previous Sunday's message. John Wesley designed his classes around discussion of what was preached. The believers who treasured Scripture most have always been the ones who captured what they heard. The layout works for expository preaching (verse-by-verse), topical preaching (one big idea), and narrative preaching (story-shaped). The "Application this week" section is the most important — that's where Sunday becomes Monday. Print four pages a month and keep them in a folder.
