Romans 6:23 – Meaning & Devotional
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
What This Verse Means
This verse presents the starkest contrast in Scripture: what sin pays versus what God gives. Sin pays wages — death. But God gives a gift — eternal life. Wages are earned; gifts are free.
We cannot earn salvation any more than we can earn a gift. If we could, it wouldn't be a gift. The entire gospel is captured in this single verse: we deserve death, but God offers life.
Historical Context
Paul wrote this as the concluding summary of Romans 6, where he argues that believers are no longer slaves to sin but have been set free to live for God. The verse contrasts the old master (sin) with the new Master (God).
How to Apply This Today
Receive God's gift of eternal life with gratitude. You can't earn it — just accept it. And share this simple, powerful verse with someone who needs to hear the gospel today.
