Acts 2:38 – Meaning & Devotional
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
What This Verse Means
Peter's response to the crowd's conviction at Pentecost lays out the essential steps of Christian initiation: repentance (turning from sin), baptism (public identification with Christ), and receiving the Holy Spirit (God's empowering presence). These are not separate, sequential events but interconnected aspects of entering new life in Christ.
Repentance comes first — a genuine change of mind and direction. Baptism publicly declares this inward change. And the Holy Spirit is God's gift to every believer, providing power for living the Christian life.
Historical Context
This was the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the believers and Peter preached the first gospel sermon. About 3,000 people responded to his message. This verse marks the birth of the Christian church and establishes the pattern for how people enter the faith.
How to Apply This Today
If you have never responded to the gospel, today is the day. Repent of your sins, be baptized as a public declaration of faith, and receive the Holy Spirit. If you are already a believer, live in the fullness of the Spirit daily.
