The Lake of Fire (Revelation 20)

The lake of fire is the final, eternal judgment for Satan, his angels, death, hell, and all whose names are not in the Lamb's Book of Life.

The Lake of Fire (Revelation 20)

Revelation 20:10 records the end of the devil: 'cast into the lake of fire and brimstone... and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.' At the great white throne, the dead are judged from the books. Death and hell are themselves cast into the lake of fire. Whoever is not found in the Book of Life is cast in also (Revelation 20:14-15).

    What Scripture Teaches

    • 1The devil is cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10)
    • 2The beast and false prophet are already there (Revelation 19:20)
    • 3Death and hell are cast into the lake of fire — the second death (Revelation 20:14)
    • 4The unrepentant dead are judged by their works (Revelation 20:12)
    • 5Whoever is not in the Book of Life is cast in (Revelation 20:15)
    • 6It was prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41)

    Key KJV Scriptures

"And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"

    Why It Matters

The lake of fire was never prepared for people — it was prepared for the devil and his angels. That God offers any sinner escape through Christ is the marvel of the gospel.

    Application for Today

Make your calling and election sure (2 Peter 1:10). Trust Christ alone for salvation, examine your faith, and urgently warn others. The gospel is the only door away from the second death.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the lake of fire the same as hell?

Scripture distinguishes them. Hell (Hades) is the present holding place of the lost dead; the lake of fire is the final, eternal state after the great white throne judgment (Revelation 20:14).

Will anyone be saved at the final judgment?

All who trust Christ have their names written in the Lamb's Book of Life (Revelation 20:15, 21:27) before that day. Now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).
