Proverbs 18:21 – Meaning & Devotional
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."
What This Verse Means
Words carry the power to build up or tear down, to give life or inflict death. This proverb places extraordinary weight on human speech — our words create consequences we must live with.
The second half warns that we 'eat the fruit' of our words. What we speak becomes the harvest we reap, whether blessing or destruction.
Historical Context
Proverbs frequently addresses the power and danger of speech. In the ancient world, spoken words carried binding legal and social weight. A word once spoken could not be retracted.
How to Apply This Today
Choose words of life today — encouragement, truth, kindness, and hope. Before speaking, consider: will these words bring life or death to the hearer?
