John 11:25-26 – Meaning & Devotional
"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
What This Verse Means
Jesus makes one of His most profound 'I am' declarations: He is not merely a teacher about resurrection — He IS the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in Him have a double assurance: the physically dead will live again, and the spiritually alive will never truly die.
The question 'Believest thou this?' personalizes the declaration. Jesus is not asking for intellectual agreement about resurrection as a concept but for personal trust in Him as the source of life that conquers death. This is the central question of the Christian faith.
Historical Context
Jesus spoke these words to Martha just before raising her brother Lazarus from the dead. Martha's brother had been dead four days. She believed in a future resurrection but had not grasped that the power of resurrection was standing right in front of her in the person of Jesus.
How to Apply This Today
Jesus asks you the same question today: 'Do you believe this?' Not as doctrine but as personal reality. If you believe in Jesus, death has lost its sting. Live today with the confidence that the Resurrection and the Life is with you.
