John 6:35 – Meaning & Devotional
"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."
What This Verse Means
Jesus makes the first of His seven 'I am' declarations in John's Gospel. He is the bread of life — the essential nourishment that satisfies the deepest hunger of the human soul. Just as bread sustains physical life, Jesus sustains spiritual life.
The promise is absolute: those who come to Him will NEVER hunger, and those who believe will NEVER thirst. Every other source of satisfaction is temporary, but Jesus provides permanent fulfillment. He does not merely give bread — He IS the bread.
Historical Context
Jesus spoke this after feeding the 5,000. The crowd followed Him seeking more physical food. Jesus redirected their attention from perishable bread to eternal sustenance. He compared Himself to the manna God provided in the wilderness, declaring that He is the true bread from heaven.
How to Apply This Today
Stop trying to satisfy your soul's hunger with things that cannot last — career success, relationships, entertainment, possessions. Come to Jesus and believe in Him. He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of your heart permanently.
