Isaiah 61:1-2 – Meaning & Devotional
"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD."
What This Verse Means
Isaiah 61 describes the Messiah's mission statement in unmistakable terms: bringing good news to the humble, healing broken hearts, freeing captives, and proclaiming God's favor. This is not a mission of political revolution but of spiritual liberation and restoration.
Jesus deliberately chose this passage for His inaugural sermon in Nazareth (Luke 4:18-21), reading it aloud and then declaring, 'This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.' By identifying Himself as the fulfillment, Jesus defined His entire ministry through these words.
Historical Context
This prophecy was written during or after the Babylonian exile when Israel needed hope for restoration. The 'acceptable year of the LORD' alludes to the Year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25), when debts were cancelled, slaves freed, and property restored. The Messiah's coming would inaugurate the ultimate Jubilee.
How to Apply This Today
Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted and set captives free. If your heart is broken today, bring it to Him — He specializes in binding wounds. If you feel imprisoned by addiction, fear, or despair, claim the liberty He purchased for you. Then extend His mission: preach good tidings to the meek around you.
