Galatians 5:1 – Meaning & Devotional
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."
What This Verse Means
Christ has set us free — not partially, not provisionally, but actually free. Paul's command is to stand firm in that freedom and refuse to go back to bondage. Freedom requires vigilance; it can be surrendered through passive drift.
The 'yoke of bondage' in Galatians refers to legalism — trying to earn God's favor through rule-keeping. But the principle applies to any system that re-enslaves: addiction, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or false religion.
Historical Context
False teachers had infiltrated the Galatian churches, insisting that Gentile believers must follow Jewish law to be truly saved. Paul is furious: Christ died to set you free — don't go back to slavery!
How to Apply This Today
Identify what tries to put you back in bondage — legalism, guilt, old habits, toxic relationships. Christ has already set you free. Stand firm and refuse to pick up chains He has broken.
