Colossians 1:17 – Meaning & Devotional
"And he is before all things, and by him all things consist."
What This Verse Means
Paul makes two cosmic claims about Christ: He existed before everything ('before all things') and He holds everything together ('by him all things consist'). The Greek word 'consist' means to cohere, to hold together. Christ is the glue of the universe.
This means that every atom, every galaxy, every heartbeat continues because Christ sustains it. If He withdrew His sustaining power for a moment, everything would collapse.
Historical Context
Paul wrote to counter false teachers in Colossae who diminished Christ's role. The Colossian heresy mixed Christianity with philosophy and angel worship. Paul responds by elevating Christ above all creation — He is not one of many powers; He is the power that holds all powers together.
How to Apply This Today
When your world feels like it's falling apart, remember who holds it together. The same Christ who sustains galaxies sustains your life. Nothing in your world is outside His sustaining power.
