Introduction
One verse before the famous promise of Christ's presence (v. 20), Jesus names the prayer dynamic of gathered believers. Two on earth agreeing in prayer release answers from the Father in heaven.
Historical Context
The context is church discipline (vv. 15-18). The promise of v. 19 is not generic agreement-prayer but covenanted gathering prayer — what the church does together on serious matters.
Original Language Insights
'Agree' (symphōnēsōsin) — symphony, sound together. Real agreement, not coincidence of language.
'Touching any thing' (peri pantos pragmatos) — concerning any matter. The scope is wide because the agreement is Spirit-wrought.
Theological Significance
Gathered prayer has unique power because the same Spirit who unites the church also shapes their asking to the Father's will. Agreement is the fruit of the Spirit's prior alignment in both hearts.
Practical Application
Pair up for prayer on a serious matter. Not a list of separate requests, but real Spirit-wrought agreement on one thing. Verse 19's 'shall be done' attaches to that kind of asking.
