Introduction
One verse before Peter's tender restoration (v. 15), John notes that this is the third post-resurrection appearance. Jesus does not give up on disciples who have failed Him; He keeps showing up.
Historical Context
The first two appearances (John 20:19, 26) were in Jerusalem. This third one happens on the Sea of Galilee — back where it all began for Peter. Jesus meets him at the original site of his calling.
Original Language Insights
'Shewed himself' (ephanerothe) — was manifested, made evident. Jesus' resurrection is not deduced but displayed, repeatedly.
Theological Significance
Repeated, patient self-disclosure is how the risen Christ deals with His own. He does not require us to discover Him in one moment of brilliance; He keeps appearing until we see.
Practical Application
Has Jesus seemed distant after a failure? He has appeared once; He will appear again. The third time, like Peter, you may find Him cooking breakfast for you.
