    Introduction

Belief, in verse 31, does not float free of content. Paul and Silas immediately spoke 'the word of the Lord' to the jailer and to his whole household. Saving faith always has an object, and the object is communicated through the Word.

    Historical Context

Roman households included family, servants, and dependents. The mission strategy of Acts repeatedly works through such households (Cornelius, Lydia, the jailer), spreading the gospel through existing social structures.

    Original Language Insights

'Spake' (elalesan) — ordinary speech, not formal sermon. The most consequential preaching is often a midnight conversation.

'The word of the Lord' (ton logon tou Kyriou) — definite, content-rich; not a vague spiritual encouragement but the message about the Lord Jesus.

    Theological Significance

There is no shortcut around the Word. Even after an earthquake and a dramatic conviction, Paul and Silas do not skip the explanation. Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17), and Acts 16:32 is the local proof.

    Practical Application

When God opens a door of curiosity in a friend or family member, speak the Word — not just your feelings or experience. The Word is what the Spirit uses to bring belief.

    Prayer Response

Lord, give me words — Your Word — for the households around me. Save them not by chance but by hearing. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does this mean families are saved together automatically?

No — each member believes personally. But God often works through household networks, and we should pray and preach with whole families in view.
