Editor’s reflection
A name that probably means 'dog' — worn by the one spy who never lost his nerve.
Caleb (Hebrew כָּלֵב, Kalev) is almost certainly built on kelev, 'dog.' Modern parents are often told it means 'wholehearted' or 'faithful,' but that is a reading imported from the phrase Scripture repeatedly attaches to him — 'he wholly followed the LORD' (Numbers 32:12) — not from the letters themselves. In the ancient Near East a dog name was not an insult so much as a claim of loyalty and watchfulness: the animal that stays at the door.
Caleb is one of only two men out of an entire generation permitted to enter Canaan. Twelve spies surveyed the land; ten reported giants and walled cities. Caleb cut through the panic in a single verse: 'Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it' (Numbers 13:30). Joshua backed him. The other ten carried the crowd, and the nation spent forty years in the wilderness for it.
What makes the name unusual is the ending. At eighty-five, Caleb asked Joshua not for a quiet retirement plot but for Hebron — the hill country still occupied by the Anakim, the very giants that had frightened the ten. 'Now therefore give me this mountain' (Joshua 14:12) is one of the great sentences in the Old Testament, and it is spoken by a man who had waited four decades to collect on a promise.
Caleb also has a quiet outsider note: he is called 'the Kenizzite' (Joshua 14:6), suggesting Edomite ancestry absorbed into Judah. The man most praised for wholehearted covenant loyalty may not have been Israelite by blood. In modern use Caleb has sat comfortably inside the US top 100 for three decades — familiar without ever feeling overexposed.
“But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went.”

What does Caleb mean in the Bible?
Caleb means "Faithful; Wholehearted" and is a name of Hebrew origin. Below is what Scripture and Christian tradition attach to that meaning.
Caleb means "faithful" or "wholehearted" in Hebrew, and few biblical figures lived up to their name more completely. Caleb was one of the twelve spies sent to scout the Promised Land, and one of only two who brought back a positive report, trusting God's power over the giants they encountered.
While ten spies focused on the obstacles, Caleb declared, "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it" (Numbers 13:30). For his faithfulness, Caleb was one of only two adults from the Exodus generation permitted to enter the Promised Land.
At age eighty-five, Caleb asked Joshua for the most challenging territory — the hill country where the giants lived — declaring, "I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me." His lifelong courage and faith make his name a powerful choice.
