Editor’s reflection
'Beloved' — the only man in Scripture called a man after God's own heart.
David (דָּוִד, Dawid) means 'beloved' or 'darling,' from the root dwd, which also gives dod, 'uncle' or 'lover' — the word used throughout the Song of Solomon. Some scholars have argued for a Mari-era title meaning 'chieftain,' but the affectionate reading is standard and fits the character the Bible gives us.
The name appears over a thousand times in the Old Testament, more than any other. What is striking is how unsparing the account is. David is the giant-killer, the harpist, the psalmist, the unifier of the kingdom — and also the man who commits adultery with Bathsheba and arranges Uriah's death. 2 Samuel 11–12 does not soften any of it, and Psalm 51 is the confession that followed.
'A man after his own heart' (1 Samuel 13:14) is often misread as a compliment about David's virtue. In context Samuel is telling Saul that the kingdom is going to someone whose loyalty is undivided, not someone who is morally flawless. The distinction is the whole point of the David narrative.
Christ is called 'the son of David' more than a dozen times in the Gospels, and Revelation 22:16 gives Him the title 'the root and the offspring of David.' As a name it has never gone out of use in English, peaked in the mid-twentieth century, and remains one of the safest, most portable choices available — Dave, Davey, Dai, Dawid, Daoud.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.”
