Thomas

Thomas, also called Didymus (meaning "twin"), was one of Jesus' twelve apostles. Though often remembered for his doubt, Thomas first appears in Scripture demonstrating remarkable courage and loyalty. When Jesus announced His intention to return to Judea where enemies awaited, Thomas declared, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

At the Last Supper, Thomas asked the honest question that prompted one of Jesus' most important statements. When Jesus said He was going to prepare a place and that the disciples knew the way, Thomas objected, "Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?" Jesus responded, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection, Thomas was absent. The other disciples' testimony wasn't enough for him: "Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe." A week later, Jesus appeared again with Thomas present and invited him to touch His wounds. Thomas's response was immediate and profound: "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus blessed those who believe without seeing, but He didn't reject Thomas for his doubts. Tradition says Thomas later took the gospel to India, where he was martyred. His journey from doubt to declaration reminds us that honest questioning can lead to deeper faith.
