Martha

Martha lived in Bethany with her sister Mary and brother Lazarus. Their home was a place of rest for Jesus, and Scripture emphasizes that "Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus." Martha's personality was practical and action-oriented.

Luke records an incident where Martha was "cumbered about much serving" while Mary sat at Jesus' feet. When Martha complained and asked Jesus to tell Mary to help, Jesus gently corrected her: "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part." Martha's service was good, but she was missing the better part—time with Jesus.

Martha's finest moment came at her brother's death. While Mary stayed home grieving, Martha went to meet Jesus: "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee." When Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection, and the life," Martha responded with a confession of faith: "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God."

After Lazarus was raised, Martha served at a dinner honoring Jesus—still using her gift of hospitality, but now from a heart transformed by deeper faith. She demonstrates that practical service and deep faith can coexist.
