James, Son of Zebedee
The First Martyr Apostle
James was one of Jesus' inner circle, along with Peter and John. He was the first apostle martyred, killed by Herod Agrippa around AD 44.
James was a Galilean fisherman, son of Zebedee and brother of John. He and John were mending nets with their father when Jesus called them to follow. They immediately left their boat and followed—suggesting they may have already encountered Jesus through John the Baptist's ministry.
Jesus nicknamed James and John "Boanerges," meaning "sons of thunder," likely reflecting their fiery temperaments. When a Samaritan village refused to receive Jesus, they asked, "Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?" Jesus rebuked their violent impulse.
Along with Peter and John, James formed Jesus' inner circle, present at the Transfiguration, Jairus's daughter's raising, and the agony in Gethsemane. Their mother once asked Jesus to seat her sons at His right and left in the kingdom. Jesus asked if they could drink His cup—and they confidently said yes. They didn't know what they were promising.
James would indeed drink that cup. He was the first apostle to be martyred, beheaded by Herod Agrippa I around AD 44. Scripture records this briefly: "And he killed James the brother of John with the sword." His early death may explain why so little is known about his ministry, but his willingness to die confirmed his commitment to the risen Christ.
