"Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ."

"And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name."

"Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation."

"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."

"As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things."

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

What does the Bible say about joy in trials?

Joy in trials seems paradoxical — yet it is one of the most distinctive marks of genuine faith. Not joy because of the trial, but joy in the midst of it, rooted in the knowledge that God is at work. Key King James Version passages include James 1:2-4, Romans 5:3-5, 1 Peter 1:6-7. This page collects 10 KJV verses about joy in trials, each quoted in full.

How can I find joy during a trial?

By focusing on God's character rather than your circumstances, remembering that trials produce patience and maturity (James 1:2-4), and trusting that God is working all things for your good (Romans 8:28).

Is joy in trials the same as happiness?

No. Happiness depends on circumstances; joy is a deep, settled confidence in God that persists regardless of what you are going through. Biblical joy is a fruit of the Spirit, not a product of comfortable conditions.
