The Day of the Lord
A great and dreadful day of divine judgment and salvation.
The prophets call it 'the day of the LORD' — a sudden, terrible, world-shaking visitation. Joel, Zephaniah, Malachi, and Paul agree: a day of wrath on the wicked and salvation for those who call upon His name.
The Prophecy
"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come."
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:"
"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise..."
A day of darkness and salvation
Joel pictures the heavens darkened and the earth shaken, but in the same breath promises that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered.
Coming as a thief
Peter and Paul both warn that the day will come suddenly, unannounced — urging watchful holiness on the church.
