Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, ended Israel's twenty-year oppression by Jabin and Sisera with a single decisive act (Judges 4-5). Deborah's song calls her 'blessed above women in the tent' (Judges 5:24 KJV) — language echoed centuries later for Mary at the annunciation.
Her Story
Fleeing the rout that Barak had led, Sisera took refuge in Jael's tent. She covered him with a mantle, gave him milk instead of the water he requested, and when he slept she drove a tent peg through his temple. Her courage and decisiveness fulfilled Deborah's prophecy that 'the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman' (4:9).
