Judges 4-5 give the most extended portrait of any woman in the Old Testament. Deborah was a prophetess who judged Israel under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel and led the nation to deliverance from Jabin king of Canaan.
Her Story
She summoned Barak to muster ten thousand men against Sisera's iron chariots. Barak said, 'If thou wilt go with me, then I will go.' Deborah went, but warned the honour would fall to a woman — and Jael drove the tent peg through Sisera's temple (Judges 4:21). After the victory Deborah and Barak sang the song of Judges 5: 'I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel' (5:7 KJV). The land had rest forty years.

Why It Matters
When men hesitated, God raised up Deborah. Her story refuses the modern myth that the Bible silences women — and refuses the opposite myth that biblical leadership is independent of God's call. She led because God called her.

When the people of God need a voice, speak. Deborah's authority was not self-asserted; it was God-given and Spirit-driven. Pray for that anointing in your own sphere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Barak weak for asking Deborah to come?
Hebrews 11:32 lists Barak among the heroes of faith. His insistence that Deborah accompany him was less cowardice than recognition of the prophetic word. Yet the honour of Sisera's defeat went to Jael instead.
Was Deborah's husband Lapidoth?
Judges 4:4 names her 'the wife of Lapidoth.' Some Jewish tradition translates the phrase as 'woman of fiery torches' — but the KJV's reading as a personal name is the most straightforward.
