    Judges 6:12 – Meaning & Devotional

"And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour."

    — Judges 6:12 (KJV)

    What This Verse Means

When the angel called Gideon a 'mighty man of valour,' Gideon was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in secret because he feared the Midianites. By all appearances, he was the opposite of mighty. Yet God called him by what he would become, not what he currently was.

God sees potential where we see inadequacy. He speaks identity over us before we have evidence to support it. This is how God works: He calls things that are not as though they were (Romans 4:17).

    Historical Context

Israel was oppressed by Midian for seven years. The Midianites destroyed crops and livestock, driving Israelites into caves. Gideon was from the weakest clan of Manasseh and considered himself the least in his father's house — yet God chose him to deliver Israel.

    How to Apply This Today

Don't let your current circumstances define your identity. God may be calling you 'mighty' while you feel weak, 'chosen' while you feel overlooked, 'capable' while you feel inadequate. Believe what God says about you more than what you see in the mirror.

    🙏 A Prayer from Judges 6:12

Lord, You see who I truly am and who I am becoming. Help me believe Your words about my identity more than my feelings of inadequacy. Make me the mighty person of faith You've called me to be. Amen.
