    What Does Genesis 1:1 Mean?

    The Bible opens with the foundational declaration that God is the eternal Creator of all things. Before anything existed, God was there, and He spoke the universe into being.

    How to Apply This Verse

    Everything begins with God. This verse establishes that life has purpose, the universe has a Designer, and nothing exists by accident. Our Creator gives meaning to all creation.

    Historical Context

    The opening verse of Scripture, written by Moses around 1400 BC. In contrast to other ancient creation myths where gods battled chaos monsters, Genesis presents a sovereign God creating effortlessly by spoken word. The Hebrew 'bara' (created) is used exclusively for divine activity—only God truly creates from nothing.

    Original Language

    בְּרֵאשִׁית(b'reshit — Hebrew)

    'B'reshit' means 'in the beginning'—from 'rosh' (head, first). It establishes that time, space, and matter had a starting point initiated by God. There was no pre-existing material; God is prior to and independent of His creation.
