What the Bible says about loss
Scripture treats loss as a real subtraction, not an illusion to be reasoned away. Job loses children, wealth, and health in a single chapter and tears his clothes before he worships. Jesus weeps at the grave of Lazarus knowing full well He is about to raise him. The shortest verse in the KJV, 'Jesus wept' (John 11:35), is the Bible's permission slip for grief.
Mourning with hope
1 Thessalonians 4:13 does not tell believers not to sorrow; it tells them not to sorrow 'even as others which have no hope'. The difference is not the volume of the grief but its horizon.
