    What the Bible says about waiting

    Waiting is one of the most common experiences in Scripture and one of the least popular. Abraham waited twenty-five years for Isaac, Joseph thirteen for the fulfilment of his dreams, David years between anointing and throne, Israel four hundred silent years for the Messiah. Isaiah 40:31 — 'they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength' — is written to people who had already been waiting a long time.

    Waiting is active, not passive

    The KJV's word carries the sense of expectant attention rather than idleness. Psalm 27:14 pairs waiting with courage: 'Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart.' Nehemiah waited months and used the time to plan. Anna waited decades in the temple and used the time to pray and fast. Biblical waiting has work in it — usually prayer, preparation, and faithfulness in the small present duty.

    Why God uses the delay

    Scripture repeatedly shows the delay shaping the person for what is coming. Joseph the favoured son could not have governed Egypt; Joseph the tested prisoner could.
