Joshua 7 Summary
Joshua 7 tells the devastating story of Achan's sin after the triumph at Jericho. Israel suffers a shocking defeat at Ai because Achan secretly kept devoted items from Jericho's conquest. Thirty-six men die, and the people's hearts 'melted.' Joshua falls before the Lord in anguish.
God reveals that someone has violated the ban. Through a process of elimination by tribe, clan, and family, Achan is identified. He confesses to taking a Babylonian garment, silver, and gold. Achan and his family are executed in the Valley of Achor, and God's anger turns away. The chapter starkly illustrates that individual sin affects the entire community.
