Matthew 5:6 – Meaning & Devotional
"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
What This Verse Means
Jesus promises satisfaction to those who crave righteousness with the same desperation that a starving person craves food or a parched traveler craves water. This is not a mild preference for goodness but an all-consuming desire for God's righteous character to fill every area of life.
The promise is absolute: they SHALL be filled. God never leaves genuine spiritual hunger unsatisfied. But the filling comes to those who hunger — not to those who are merely curious about righteousness or casually interested in spiritual growth.
Historical Context
In first-century Palestine, hunger and thirst were daily realities for many. Jesus' audience would have viscerally understood what it meant to desperately need food and water. By using this metaphor for spiritual longing, Jesus elevated the pursuit of righteousness above the pursuit of daily bread.
How to Apply This Today
Evaluate the intensity of your spiritual appetite. Are you casually nibbling at Scripture, or are you ravenously hungry for God's Word? Increase your hunger by reducing spiritual junk food — entertainment and distractions that dull your appetite for God. Fast from something temporal this week to sharpen your hunger for the eternal.
