2 Corinthians 5:21 – Meaning & Devotional
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
What This Verse Means
This is the great exchange at the heart of the gospel: Christ, who was completely sinless, took our sin upon Himself so that we could receive God's righteousness. Our sin was placed on Him; His righteousness was placed on us.
This is not righteousness we earned or developed — it is the very righteousness of God, credited to us through faith. We stand before God clothed in Christ's perfection.
Historical Context
Paul was defending his apostolic ministry and the message of reconciliation. This verse serves as the theological foundation for everything he preached: God made a way for sinful humans to be declared righteous — through the sinless sacrifice of His Son.
How to Apply This Today
Stop trying to produce your own righteousness. It's a gift you receive, not a goal you achieve. When guilt or inadequacy whisper that you're not good enough, remember: you are the righteousness of God in Christ.

🙏 A Prayer from 2 Corinthians 5:21
Father, I am in awe of the great exchange — my sin for Christ's righteousness. Thank You for clothing me in perfection I could never earn. Help me to live in the freedom and confidence of being made righteous in Your sight. Amen.
