1 Corinthians 15:3-4 – Meaning & Devotional
"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures."
What This Verse Means
Paul distills the gospel to its irreducible core: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again — all according to the Scriptures. These are historical facts with theological meaning: His death atoned for sin, His burial confirmed His real death, and His resurrection vindicated His claims and secured our hope.
This is not Paul's invention — he received it as established tradition, making it one of the earliest Christian creeds, dating to within years of the crucifixion.
Historical Context
Some in Corinth were denying the resurrection. Paul responds by anchoring the gospel in eyewitness testimony and Old Testament prophecy. He lists multiple witnesses — Peter, the twelve, 500 people at once — to establish the resurrection as historical fact.
How to Apply This Today
Never drift from the simplicity of the gospel: Christ died, was buried, and rose again. This is the foundation of everything. When faith feels complicated, return to these three facts and let them anchor your soul.

🙏 A Prayer from 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Father, thank You for the gospel — simple yet profound, historical yet eternally relevant. Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose again. I stake my entire life on this truth. Let it be the foundation of everything I am and do. Amen.
