    Read Chapter

    Introduction

Just before the famous declaration of salvation by grace (vv. 8-9), Paul names the cosmic purpose of that salvation: God means to spend the coming ages displaying His grace through the saved. Believers are exhibits of mercy, not trophies of merit.

    Historical Context

Roman emperors paraded captives and treasures to display imperial power. Paul appropriates the image: God will parade rescued sinners to display imperial grace — and the parade lasts forever.

    Original Language Insights

'Exceeding riches' (hyperballon ploutos) — surpassing, over-the-top wealth. The same hyperballon Paul uses of the love of Christ that 'passeth knowledge' (Eph 3:19).

'Shew' (endeixetai) — to demonstrate publicly, to put on display.

    Theological Significance

The believer's eternal future is not merely personal bliss but participation in God's self-revelation. Heaven will not be a private reward; it will be a public exhibition of who God is, with the saved as living evidence.

    Practical Application

When you feel useless, remember Ephesians 2:7. Your existence as a forgiven sinner is part of God's eternal curriculum on grace. He is not done teaching the universe through you.

    Cross-References & Related Scriptures

    Ephesians 3:10

"To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers... might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God."

Paul repeats the theme: the church exists to display God's wisdom and grace.

    Ephesians 2:8-9

"For by grace are ye saved through faith."

The very next verses describe the mechanism of the salvation God will display forever.

    Prayer Response

Lord, let my life — saved by grace — display the exceeding riches of Your kindness, now and forever. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are believers just objects on display?

Not passive objects but worshipping participants. We are both the exhibit and the audience, glorified into the joy of seeing what God did in us.
