Editor’s reflection
Greek for 'hunter' — not biblical, and the common 'untamed' meaning is wrong.
Theron comes from the Greek thēr, 'wild beast,' via thērōn, 'hunting' or 'hunter.' It was borne by a fifth-century BC tyrant of Acragas in Sicily whom Pindar praised in an ode, and it entered English use through classical reading rather than through any church tradition.
The frequent claim that Theron means 'untamed' comes from confusing the hunter with the hunted — thēr is the wild animal, and thērōn is the one pursuing it. The name means hunter.
It is not in the Bible. The root, though, appears in a memorable place: Paul on Malta shakes the viper off his hand, and the islanders watch to see him swell up or fall dead, using thērion, the diminutive of thēr, for the 'venomous beast' (Acts 28:4-5). The same word carries the 'beast' imagery through Revelation. That is vocabulary overlap, not a name, and it should not be presented as a biblical pedigree.
Theron is used in South Africa as a surname of Huguenot origin — Charlize Theron's family came from French Protestant refugees — which is its clearest Christian historical link. As a first name it is uncommon, strong-sounding, and reads modern in English despite being genuinely ancient.
“And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.”
