Editor’s reflection
'Of Zeus' — and the New Testament has a close relative of this name in Titus.
Zenaida derives from the Greek Zenais, a name built on Zēn, an oblique form of Zeus. It means, plainly, 'of Zeus' or 'belonging to Zeus.' Russian took it up as Zinaida, which is where most modern use comes from, and it travelled to Spanish-speaking countries as Zenaida.
There is a genuine New Testament connection, though not to this exact name. Paul tells Titus: 'Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently' (Titus 3:13). Zenas is a contracted Greek name of the same family — most likely from Zenodorus, 'gift of Zeus.' A Christian lawyer trusted enough to carry Paul's instructions bore a name built on the chief pagan god, and nobody in the text remarks on it.
That is the honest framing for Zenaida: not a biblical name, but part of a naming pattern the New Testament plainly accepted. Early Christians did not systematically rename themselves, and the epistles are full of Hermes, Phoebe, Olympas and Zenas.
Zenaida is also the scientific genus name for mourning doves, given in honour of Zénaïde Bonaparte — a pleasant accident, given what doves mean in Scripture. In use the name is striking, clearly foreign in English, and shortens naturally to Zena or Naida.
“Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.”
