Editor’s reflection
The mountain where Deborah sent ten thousand men down the slope.
Tabor is a place before it is a person. Mount Tabor is the steep, rounded hill rising out of the Jezreel valley in lower Galilee, marking the border of Zebulun, Issachar and Naphtali (Joshua 19:22). The Hebrew Tavor is of uncertain derivation; 'height' or 'mound' is the usual suggestion, and the shape of the hill makes it plausible.
Its moment is Judges 4. Deborah summons Barak and tells him to draw ten thousand men to Tabor, where Sisera's nine hundred chariots of iron cannot follow up the slope. 'And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand' (Judges 4:14). The mountain is the tactical fact that makes the victory possible.
Christian tradition from the fourth century onwards identifies Tabor as the Mount of Transfiguration, and that is why churches stand on the summit today. The Gospels never name the mountain — Matthew 17:1 says only 'an high mountain apart' — so this is tradition rather than text, and worth stating as such.
There is a second, unrelated Tabor in English: the small drum played with a pipe in medieval and folk music. As a given name today Tabor is rare, reads as a surname-style boy's name, and has the advantage of being genuinely scriptural without being over-used.
“Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men.”
What does Tabor mean in the Bible?
Tabor means "Mound; Height; Broken region" and is a name of Hebrew origin. Below is what Scripture and Christian tradition attach to that meaning.
Tabor means "mound" or "height" in Hebrew. Mount Tabor is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Galilee region — a striking, dome-shaped mountain rising 1,886 feet above the Jezreel Valley that has been associated with divine encounters throughout biblical history.
Mount Tabor was the rallying point where Deborah and Barak assembled 10,000 warriors before their decisive victory over Sisera's army with its 900 iron chariots. From this height, Deborah gave the command: "Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand."
The Psalmist celebrated Tabor alongside Hermon: "Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name." Jeremiah used Tabor as a metaphor for certainty: "As Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come."
Christian tradition identifies Mount Tabor as the site of Jesus' Transfiguration — where His face "did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light," and He spoke with Moses and Elijah. Whether or not this identification is historically certain, the association has made Tabor a symbol of divine glory revealed to human eyes.
