Editor’s reflection
'King of righteousness' — a priest with no genealogy, and the pattern for Christ's priesthood.
Melchizedek (Hebrew מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק) is melek, 'king,' plus tsedeq, 'righteousness': 'my king is righteousness,' or as Hebrews renders it, 'King of righteousness.' He is also king of Salem, which Hebrews reads as 'King of peace' (Hebrews 7:2).
He appears in three verses of Genesis. Abram returns from rescuing Lot, and 'Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God' (Genesis 14:18). He blesses Abram, and Abram gives him a tenth of everything — the first tithe in Scripture, paid by the patriarch to a priest who is outside the covenant line entirely.
Psalm 110:4 picks him up a thousand years later: 'Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.' Hebrews 7 builds its whole argument on him — that a priesthood without recorded father, mother or genealogy, resting on an oath rather than descent, is greater than the Levitical order and points to Christ. The silence about his parentage is the argument, not a gap in the records.
The name is too long for common modern use, but Melchizedek appears as a given name in some African and African-American families, with Melky and Zeke as the natural short forms.
“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.”
What does Melchizedek mean in the Bible?
Melchizedek means "King of righteousness" and is a name of Hebrew origin. Below is what Scripture and Christian tradition attach to that meaning.
Melchizedek means "king of righteousness" in Hebrew. He is one of the most mysterious and theologically significant figures in the Bible — the king of Salem (Jerusalem) and "priest of the most high God" who appeared to Abraham after his victory over the four kings.
Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abraham and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tithe of everything — establishing the precedent of tithing. What makes Melchizedek extraordinary is that he held the dual office of king and priest — a combination forbidden under the Mosaic law, where kings came from Judah and priests from Levi.
The writer of Hebrews devotes extensive attention to Melchizedek, arguing that Jesus is "a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek" — a priesthood superior to Aaron's. Melchizedek is described as "without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life."
This description has led to extensive theological discussion. Some see Melchizedek as a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ; others as a historical figure whose genealogy was deliberately omitted to create a literary type of Christ's eternal priesthood.
