Editor’s reflection
'My messenger' — the last name in the Old Testament, and possibly a title rather than a man.
Malachi renders the Hebrew Mal'akhi (מַלְאָכִי), 'my messenger' or 'my angel,' from mal'akh, the ordinary word for both a human envoy and an angelic one. Scholars have long debated whether it was the prophet's given name or a title drawn from Malachi 3:1 — 'Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me.' Jewish tradition in the Talmud even proposed identifying him with Ezra. The Septuagint hedges, translating the superscription as 'by the hand of his messenger.'
Whichever it is, the book is the Old Testament's closing argument, and it is structured as a series of disputes: God makes a statement, the people answer 'Wherein?', and God answers the objection. Six times over. It is the most conversational prophetic book in Scripture, and the least ornamental.
Malachi also closes the Hebrew canon with a promise that the Gospels pick up immediately: 'Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD' (Malachi 4:5). Jesus applies this to John the Baptist in Matthew 11:14. So the name 'my messenger' sits at the exact seam between the Testaments, pointing forward across four centuries of silence.
The name has grown steadily in the US since the 1990s and is now well inside the top 500, favoured by parents drawn to Old Testament prophet names with a soft ending — the same set as Isaiah, Elijah, and Micah. It is commonly shortened to Mal or Kai, the latter of which has done a great deal for its popularity.
“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me.”
