Editor’s reflection
A name that is a sentence of praise — and the tribe the Bible calls a lion, from which the Messiah came.
Judah is the Hebrew Yehudah (יְהוּדָה), from the verb yadah, 'to praise, to give thanks, to throw (the hands) out.' Leah names him in Genesis 29:35 with the explanation built in: 'Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah.' She had already named three sons out of grievance over an unloved marriage; the fourth she names out of praise, and Scripture quietly notes she then 'left bearing.'
Judah's own story in Genesis is unflattering — he proposes selling Joseph (37:26–27) and is publicly shamed by Tamar (38:26). Yet by Genesis 44 he offers himself as a slave in Benjamin's place before Joseph, and it is that speech, not any heroic act, that breaks Joseph open. Genesis presents Judah as the Bible's first extended portrait of moral change.
Jacob's blessing then sets the whole trajectory: 'Judah is a lion's whelp... The sceptre shall not depart from Judah' (Genesis 49:9–10). David comes from Judah, the southern kingdom takes his name, the word 'Jew' is derived from it, and Revelation 5:5 announces 'the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David' as the only one worthy to open the scroll. Hebrews 7:14 makes the point explicit: 'our Lord sprang out of Juda.'
In modern naming, Judah has risen sharply in the US since 2010 and is now firmly mainstream among Christian families, helped by the fact that it avoids the New Testament shadow of Judas (the Greek form of the same name) while keeping the meaning intact. Jude is the natural short form.
“Judah is a lion's whelp... The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come.”
Why parents choose Judah today
- •Means 'praise' — Leah's own explanation in Genesis 29:35
- •The messianic tribe: 'the Lion of the tribe of Juda' in Revelation 5:5
- •Gives the short form Jude without the Judas association
- •Strong two-syllable rhythm that works with most surnames
