Blythe comes from the Old English blīþe, meaning 'joyful, kind, gentle.' It is one of a very small group of English given names that began life as an ordinary adjective and never travelled through Latin or Greek on the way. The same root produced 'blithe' and the compound 'blithesome,' and it is related to the Old Norse blíðr, 'mild, gracious.' The sense in early English was warmer than the modern 'blithe' (which drifted toward 'carefree to the point of careless') — it meant a settled cheerfulness of disposition.

Blythe is not a biblical name, and no honest treatment should pretend otherwise. What it has is a direct semantic match with one of the most repeated commands in the New Testament.
