Colton Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Colton is an English habitational surname from any of several villages named Colton, generally from the Old English personal name Cola (or col, 'coal, charcoal') plus tūn, 'settlement, enclosure.' So the plain meaning is 'Cola's town' or 'coal town.' It became a first name in the US in the 1980s and rose sharply through the 2000s, part of the broader -ton and -den wave alongside Easton, Weston, Camden, and Braden.

It has no Hebrew or Greek root and appears nowhere in the KJV. Its association with Christian families in the United States comes almost entirely from Colton Burpo, whose near-death experience during a burst appendix at age four became the 2010 book Heaven Is for Real and a 2014 film. Whatever one concludes about that account — and many thoughtful Christians hold it loosely — it made the name familiar in church circles in a way no etymology would have.

If a family wants a scriptural anchor for the name's literal sense, the coal image is a strong one.
