Titus

Titus was a Greek believer who became one of Paul's closest ministry partners. Unlike Timothy, Titus was fully Gentile, and Paul refused to have him circumcised when Jewish Christians demanded it—making Titus a living proof that the gospel was for Gentiles without requiring Jewish customs.

Paul took Titus to the Jerusalem Council, where the apostles confirmed that Gentile believers need not be circumcised. This victory established Titus as a symbol of Gentile freedom in Christ. Paul called him "mine own son after the common faith," indicating a deep spiritual mentoring relationship.

Titus proved himself in difficult situations. Paul sent him to Corinth during a painful conflict with that church. The Corinthians had rejected Paul's authority and embraced false teachers. Titus navigated this crisis with such skill that Paul later rejoiced: "I am exceedingly joyful" at Titus' report of their repentance. Titus also organized the collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem among the Corinthian churches.

Paul later stationed Titus in Crete to "set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city." The epistle to Titus gives instructions for church organization, sound doctrine, and godly living. Tradition holds that Titus served as bishop of Crete for the rest of his life, faithfully building the church Paul had planted.
