    Who was Esther?

    Esther was a Jewish orphan who became Queen of Persia and risked her life to save her people from genocide.

    Esther, originally named Hadassah, was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in the Persian Empire. When King Ahasuerus sought a new queen after banishing Vashti, Esther was among the beautiful young virgins gathered to the palace. She found favor with everyone, especially the king, who made her queen—unaware that she was Jewish.

    When the king's advisor Haman, enraged that Mordecai refused to bow to him, obtained a decree to destroy all Jews throughout the empire, Mordecai sent word to Esther, urging her to intercede with the king. Esther faced a terrible dilemma: approaching the king unbidden meant risking death, yet remaining silent meant certain death for her people.

    Mordecai's words cut through her fear: "Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" Esther asked the Jews to fast for three days, then resolved: "If I perish, I perish." She approached the king, found favor, and invited him and Haman to two banquets.

    At the second banquet, Esther revealed Haman's plot and her Jewish identity. The king's anger burned against Haman, who was hanged on the very gallows he had built for Mordecai. A new decree allowed the Jews to defend themselves, and the feast of Purim was established to commemorate their deliverance. Esther's courage saved her nation and demonstrated that God positions His people in unexpected places for His purposes.
