    Haman, elevated to chief minister, demands that all bow to him. Mordecai refuses, and when Haman learns Mordecai is Jewish, he plots to destroy not just Mordecai but all Jews in the Persian Empire. He casts 'pur' (lots) to choose the date and obtains the king's decree for the genocide.

    The casting of lots—from which the holiday Purim takes its name—appears random but is under God's sovereign control. The date falls nearly a year away, giving time for God's counter-plan to unfold.
