Eliezer (Abraham's Servant)

Though never named in Genesis 24 (he is likely Eliezer of Damascus mentioned in Genesis 15:2), Abraham's eldest servant plays a starring role in one of Scripture's most beautiful love stories. He ruled over all that Abraham had, and Abraham entrusted him with the most important mission imaginable: finding a wife for Isaac from among Abraham's relatives.

Abraham made the servant swear a solemn oath not to take a wife for Isaac from the Canaanites but to go to Abraham's country and kindred. The servant raised a practical concern: what if the woman refused to come? Abraham assured him that God's angel would go before him. If the woman refused, the servant would be released from his oath—but under no circumstances was Isaac to return to Mesopotamia.

The servant's approach to this mission is a masterclass in prayerful dependence on God. Upon arriving at the well near Nahor's city, he prayed for a specific sign: the woman who offered water to him and his camels would be God's chosen bride for Isaac. Before he finished praying, Rebekah appeared and did exactly as he had asked.

Rather than rushing, the servant worshipped God, then carefully confirmed Rebekah's family connections. He told her family the entire story, emphasizing God's guidance at every step. When they agreed, he worshipped God again. When they tried to delay his departure, he insisted on returning immediately. His single-minded devotion to his master's mission models how believers should serve God's purposes.
