    1The Reality of Eternity

The Bible teaches that every human being will exist forever. The question is not whether we will live eternally, but where. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God 'hath set the world in their heart' — literally, 'eternity in their heart.' We are created for more than this life.

Daniel 12:2 states, 'And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.' Jesus confirmed this in John 5:28-29: 'The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.'

The reality of eternity gives weight to every decision we make in this life. The choices we make about Jesus Christ determine our eternal destiny. This is not fear-mongering — it is the most loving warning the Bible offers. 2 Peter 3:9 reveals God's heart: 'The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.'

Eternity is real, it is coming, and it is personal. The Bible devotes hundreds of verses to the topic because God wants us to be prepared.

"And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."

    — Daniel 12:2 (KJV)

2What the Bible Says About Heaven

Heaven is the dwelling place of God and the eternal home of every believer. Jesus described it as His Father's house: 'In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you' (John 14:2).

Revelation 21 provides the most detailed description of the new heaven and new earth. The holy city, New Jerusalem, descends from God, adorned as a bride. Its streets are gold, its gates are pearl, and the glory of God illuminates it so there is no need for the sun or moon.

But the greatest reality of heaven is not its beauty — it is God's presence. Revelation 21:3 declares, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.'

In heaven there is no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain (Revelation 21:4). There is no more sin, no more temptation, no more separation from God. Believers will worship, serve, and enjoy God forever.

1 Corinthians 2:9 captures the wonder: 'Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.' Heaven exceeds our greatest imagination.

"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."

    — John 14:2 (KJV)

3What the Bible Says About Hell

The Bible teaches that hell is a real place of eternal punishment for those who reject God. Jesus spoke more about hell than any other person in Scripture. In Matthew 25:41, He declared, 'Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.'

Hell was not created for people — it was prepared for Satan and the fallen angels. But those who choose to follow Satan's path of rebellion against God will share his fate. Revelation 20:15 states, 'And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.'

Jesus described hell as a place of outer darkness (Matthew 8:12), weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42), and where 'their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched' (Mark 9:44). These descriptions convey the horror of eternal separation from a God of light, love, and goodness.

Hell is not the absence of God's presence but the fullness of His wrath against sin. Romans 6:23 warns, 'For the wages of sin is death.' The justice of God requires that sin be punished. Those who refuse Christ's payment for their sin must bear the penalty themselves.

The doctrine of hell is not popular, but it is biblical. It underscores the seriousness of sin, the justice of God, and the urgency of the gospel. It makes the offer of salvation through Jesus Christ infinitely precious.

"Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."

    — Matthew 25:41 (KJV)

4How to Be Sure of Your Eternal Destiny

The Bible is clear about how a person can be sure of going to heaven. It is not about being a good person, attending church, or performing religious rituals. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

John 3:16 is the most famous verse in the Bible: 'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' The offer of eternal life is open to 'whosoever' — anyone who believes.

Romans 10:9 makes it personal: 'That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.' Salvation requires acknowledging Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection.

1 John 5:13 provides assurance: 'These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.' You can know — not hope, not guess, but know — that you have eternal life.

The thief on the cross had no time for good works, baptism, or church attendance. Yet Jesus promised him, 'To day shalt thou be with me in paradise' (Luke 23:43). Faith alone in Christ alone is sufficient for salvation.

If you have never placed your trust in Jesus Christ, today is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2 urges, 'Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.' Do not delay.
