What "What is the Day of Pentecost?" Actually Means
Pentecost was originally a Jewish harvest festival celebrated fifty days after Passover. In Acts 2, it became the birthday of the Christian church when the Holy Spirit came upon the gathered believers with the sound of a rushing mighty wind and tongues of fire. The apostles began speaking in languages they had never learned, and Jews from many nations heard the gospel in their own languages. Peter preached a powerful sermon explaining that this fulfilled Joel's prophecy about the Spirit being poured out on all flesh. About 3,000 people believed and were baptized that day. Pentecost marked the transition from Jesus' earthly ministry to the Spirit-empowered era of the church.
