"Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." — Ephesians 5:21-25 (KJV)

The Biblical Answer
Submission is one of the most misunderstood and misapplied concepts in the Bible. The Greek word 'hupotasso' means to place oneself under, to yield, or to cooperate with. Biblical submission is not about inferiority, oppression, or blind obedience — it is a voluntary posture of respect and cooperation that reflects the character of Christ. All Christians are called to submit to God. James 4:7 commands, 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.' This is the foundation of all other submission — recognizing God's absolute authority and aligning our wills with His. Believers are also called to submit to government. Romans 13:1 states, 'Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.' First Peter 2:13-14 adds that we should submit 'for the Lord's sake' to every ordinance of man. Within the church, believers are to submit to their leaders. Hebrews 13:7, 17 instructs, 'Remember them which have the rule over you... Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account.' In the family, wives are called to submit to their husbands. Ephesians 5:22-24 commands, 'Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.' This does not mean the wife is inferior — both are equal in worth and standing before God. It means the wife voluntarily yields to her husband's leadership, just as the church yields to Christ. Husbands, in turn, are commanded to love their wives sacrificially, as Christ loved the church. The husband's authority is a stewardship to be exercised in love, not a right to be asserted in domination. Children are to submit to parents (Ephesians 6:1), employees to employers (Ephesians 6:5), and all believers to one another in the fear of God (Ephesians 5:21). The supreme example of submission is Jesus Christ Himself. Though equal with God, He 'humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross' (Philippians 2:8). His submission did not diminish His deity; it displayed His glory. Biblical submission is therefore a noble calling, a reflection of Christ's own character, and a means of peace and order in a fallen world.
