The Eternal Throne of David
God's covenant with David fulfilled in Christ's everlasting reign.
God promised David that his throne would be established forever. The angel Gabriel announced to Mary that her Son would sit on the throne of His father David, and Peter at Pentecost declared the resurrection of Jesus to be its fulfillment.
The Prophecy
"...I will set up thy seed after thee...and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever."
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder...Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom..."
The Fulfillment
"...and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."
"...he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne...This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses."
The Davidic covenant
In 2 Samuel 7, God pledged an everlasting throne to David's offspring — a promise too vast for Solomon, awaiting a greater Son.
Sealed by resurrection
Peter proves at Pentecost that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the enthroning of David's greater Son — He now reigns at God's right hand.
