The Righteous Branch of David
Jeremiah and Zechariah foretold a righteous Branch — the Lord our Righteousness.
The prophets repeatedly call the coming Messiah 'the Branch' — a tender shoot from the felled tree of David. He would reign in righteousness, build God's temple, and be called 'The LORD our Righteousness.'
The Prophecy
"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper...and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."
"...Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord..."
"And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:"
The Fulfillment
"...There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust."
"But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:"
A shoot from a stump
After the fall of the Davidic monarchy, the kingdom looked like a felled tree. Isaiah promised a Branch from Jesse's roots — the dynasty's quiet revival in the person of Christ.
The LORD our Righteousness
Jeremiah names the Branch with the covenant name of God Himself — Jehovah Tsidkenu — fulfilled as Christ becomes the believer's righteousness.
