Exposition
This psalm describes the security of those who make God their dwelling place. The 'secret place' refers to intimate fellowship with God, where we find His protective covering.
Historical Setting
This psalm's authorship is debated—Jewish tradition attributes it to Moses. The 'secret place' (Hebrew 'seter') refers to the innermost part of the tabernacle, where God's presence dwelt. Four names for God appear in verses 1-2 alone (Most High, Almighty, LORD, God), each emphasizing a different aspect of His protective character.
Original Language Notes
'Seter' means a hiding place, shelter, or secret place—a place of intimate concealment. 'Elyon' means Most High—the supreme God above all. Together they describe intimate access to the highest possible authority: God's own hidden shelter.
Pastoral Application
True security isn't found in circumstances but in relationship with God. When we abide in Him and declare Him our refuge, we experience His protection and peace.
